9th August 2011

Today started out a little slowly, with everyone either sieving or troweling in the trench. We were trying to hurry because we needed to record and photograph this new context, and Michelle and Graham were worried about not getting enough done before the week’s end.

Knowing that it is supposed to pour tomorrow encouraged us to work as quickly as possible. We were only finding animal bones for a while, but things picked up after lunch. Marion and I were troweling and Noel came over, looked in our bone tray, and picked out an artifact. Marion had found 7 pieces of a bone comb, without even noticing! When it was cleaned off you could see that the comb was beautifully decorated-very different from the others found this past week.

Later, after afternoon tea, we began pulling up the paving slabs (with John’s help of course). Amy found another bone comb under the slabs. I think that was the 4th bone comb in the past 7 days, and they have all been different! All of our new finds have motivated us for the work ahead of us.
